From 2023, Canadian citizens will have to present an approved ETIAS visa when travelling to Croatia. This ETIAS visa will allow Canadian citizens to enter Croatia for tourism, work, transit, or for medical reasons, as long as the duration of the trip is no more than 90 days, and the visa will be valid for multiple trips made via air, sea, or land. Besides, people between 18 and 70 years of age will be able to apply for this visa free of charge.
What is ETIAS Croatia for Canadians?
ETIAS will come into force in 2023, as part of a European Commission program aimed at strengthening European borders and keeping a digital track on all people travelling to the European Schengen Area. Following some terrorist attacks that affected some European countries, this program was already approved in 2016. In the last years, data sharing between European Union countries has been expanded, and this allowed for the creation of the ETIAS visa system, that connects the applications for this visa with already existing databases.
How does the ETIAS Croatia permit work for Canadians
From November 2023 Canadian citizens must present an ETIAS visa before embarking on a trip to Croatia. However, if the trip has other purposes than those provided for the ETIAS permit, or it will be longer than 90 days, they will have to obtain a full visitor Schengen permit, at the embassy or consulate of Croatia, respecting timing and requirements for the visa they are applying for. Once issued, ETIAS has a duration of 3 years, and can be used for multiple entries in Croatia and other Schengen Area countries, provided that each visit has a duration of less than 90 days. To make sure you get your approved ETIAS in time for your trip, it is recommended to apply for the permit at least 4 days before the departure date. If the ETIAS permit is denied, you can still apply for a Schengen permit at the embassy or consulate of Croatia or present an appeal to the country that denied the visa.
